A 200-year-old listed building that was originally part of the stable block for the private Cairnsmore Estate, hereditary home of the Stewart Family and once the shooting estate of the Dukes of Bedford. Situated in a unique location approached via an avenue with a Victorian Pinetum, rhododendron, and broad-leaf woods, the surroundings evoke a by-gone time. The cottages’ fabulous and peaceful location creates an ideal base for relaxing and exploring this quiet corner of Scotland.
Accommodation Description. Previously a smithy and dining area for the estate workers, the cottage now provides quality holiday accommodation with an Eco-Edge for up to 4 people. It was refurbished to a very high standard at the beginning of 2010 with, most importantly, Geothermal under-floor central heating. Other improvements include a new bathroom (luxury double-ended bath with overhead shower), a wood-burning stove in the living room and flagstone flooring throughout the main living areas maintaining a cosy cottage atmosphere.
There are two bedrooms in Stable Cottage, both overlooking the back garden. The master bedroom has a comfortable king-size Sleigh bed with matching furniture. The second offers twin single beds. Egyptian Cotton bed linen and towels are provided. Both bedrooms are carpeted.
Bathroom with luxurious double-ended bath and traditional style overhead shower; heated towel rail, shaver point; washbasin and toilet. All hot water is provided by the ground source heat pump.
A bright well-equipped kitchen-diner with electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge, and washing machine. Along with the usual self-catering equipment and utensils you would expect to find, a traditional pulley maid is provided on which to air clothes.
After a day of exploration, the perfect place to relax is a cosy lounge. Equipped with; two settees, TV (Freeview), DVD and separate CD/radio player and a wood-burning stove completes this comfortable room. WiFi internet connection.
The courtyard garage houses a log store along with space for storing bikes or canoes. Bike washing facilities. The garden is accessed from the kitchen and enclosed making it ideal for pets. A south-facing suntrap where red squirrels and greater spotted woodpeckers are frequent visitors. Sandstone flagged patio with garden furniture and BBQ. Sorry, no smoking.
Area. There is wonderful walking in the surrounding uplands (highlighted in the Newton Stewart Walkfest) – Range of the Awful Hand, The Merrick, Dungeon Hills, western sections of the Southern Upland Way. The cottage is just off the footpath to the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet (2,300 feet), an increasingly popular walk with locals and tourists. For mountain bikers, the Kirroughtree, one of the stages on the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Network (1.5 miles) can be accessed via the National Cycle Route 7 which runs past the entrance to the Estate. The adjacent Galloway Forest Park has recently been designated as Britain’s only Dark Skies Park.
